Located
inside the Yoly Building in the Chechnya area of town, Platinum arrives on the Addis night scene with much pomp and fanfare
not to mention a 'take no prisoners' attitude. Yes, that means you too, Gaslight! In fact, Platinum does a credible job in
approaching the state of the art which Gaslight undeniably represents here in Addis (and many other places in the world besides!).
Top flight decor and furnishings abound. The sound system will literally rattle your teeth and there's so much marble throughout the
club, they must have squeezed the national supply while they were building the club.
You will generally enter the club on the its top level and walk around the balconies with
their wrap around bars or loungy seating to the double staircases and descend to the main level of the club. There you will find an
enormous dance floor winged on either side by equally impressive bars. A mish mash of high, medium and low sofa seating is interspersed
around the dancefloor and in front of each bar. The aforementioned sound system pumps out what seem to be mostly hip hop (though may vary
based on what day of the week you go) tunes which of course accentuate the heart stopping bass lines the crowd on the dancefloor is grooving
to. There is usually an abundance of wait staff around with the ladies very smartly dressed in red outfits and efficient to the point that
your glass may not be empty for more than a few seconds before a refill will magically appear should you so desire.
All this does
come at a price of course. Platinum is one of the very few clubs in Addis (besides Gaslight of course) which requires a
cover charge from patrons and at that not much less than Gaslight's. Nevertheless, it does not seem to stop most of its clientele
(which range towards the younger crowd especially on weekends) and neither do the higher than average drink prices. In fact, looking
at the frenzy on the dancefloor, doesn't look like too much of anything at all is bothering them at the moment. And no reason to think
that it will for future visits to Platinum either.
